How Many Bones Does A Newborn Baby Have

A newborn baby has roughly 300 bones at birth. 1

That sounds a little weird, given the fact that adults have only 206 bones by the time we're done growing up. But basically, it's just because a lot of a baby's bones are super soft and not quite connected yet. As they start growing up, some of these bones just kinda merge together. 2

It's actually pretty handy that some of these bones are soft at birth. The baby's skull, for instance, is made up of a bunch of separate plates that can sorta slide over each other a little bit - that makes it a heck of a lot easier for the baby to come out during delivery. Later on down the line, these plates come together to form a much stronger skull. 3

As your kid grows up, several of these bones just sort themselves out and join together. That reduces the overall number and makes their whole body a lot stronger and more stable.

So, a baby starts with more bones, but hey - that's just part of how their body develops and gets stronger over time.
