Are Chemical Peels Safe During Pregnancy?

Are Chemical Peels Safe During Pregnancy

Some chemical peels may be considered safe during pregnancy, but not all. For example, superficial peels such as glycolic acid and lactic acid peels are believed to be harmless since they do not penetrate deeply into the skin and therefore do not have a significant negative impact on one’s body. However, it is advisable to avoid peels containing salicylic acid and trichloroacetic acid or get them done only under strict medical supervision.

Plus, since there is little scientific information available on beauty procedures during pregnancy, it is better to check with your doctor before undertaking any kind of chemical peeling if you’re expecting.

Which Chemical Peels Are Considered Safer?

Not all acids behave the same way once applied to the skin.

Glycolic acid peels are considered one of the safest choices during pregnancy because only a small amount penetrates beyond the skin surface. Also, lactic acid peels are easily tolerated for treating acne related to pregnancy without reported negative consequences. When a chemical peel is medically indicated, these superficial peels are generally preferred over stronger alternatives.1

Which Chemical Peels Should Be Avoided?

Salicylic acid peels require greater caution because they are absorbed more readily through the skin than glycolic or lactic acid. For the same reason, Jessner's peels, which commonly contain salicylic acid, are also not typically recommended during pregnancy unless advised by a healthcare professional.1

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels should also be approached cautiously. TCA can be absorbed into the bloodstream after application, and some evidence has linked higher maternal exposure to an increased risk of low birth weight. Although TCA has been used for certain medical conditions during pregnancy, its routine cosmetic use is generally discouraged.1

The Bottom Line

Because there are limited studies involving pregnant women, cosmetic chemical peels should only be performed after discussing the risks and benefits with your dermatologist and obstetrician. And for extra caution, it’s best to try to delay any sort of chemical peels until after pregnancy.
