Can I Eat Strawberries During Pregnancy?

Can I Eat Strawberries During Pregnancy

Yes, strawberries are safe to consume during pregnancy and are an excellent addition to the pregnant mother’s diet. However, unlike other fruits and veggies, handle them properly. Ensure that they are washed under clean, running water before cutting and eating them. Consuming strawberries in moderation is also the key (don’t have too many in one go). 1

These bright red berries come with beneficial nutrients that support both you and your developing baby. Strawberries naturally contain folate (vitamin B9) and vitamin C, which are important for growth and development during pregnancy. Eating strawberries can help raise your intake of these vitamins, which are linked to better antioxidant status and nutrient levels in the blood after eating them. 1

To add, folate is especially important because it plays a key role in cell division and DNA synthesis, and a better folate status has been associated with reduced risk of adverse outcomes like neural tube defects and other pregnancy complications when overall folate intake is adequate. Additionally, higher fruit and vegetable intake, which includes vitamin C from fruits like strawberries, has been associated with improved measures of fetal growth up to 6 months of age in observational studies. 3 4 5 6

That said, strawberries should be eaten as part of a balanced pregnancy diet, not in excess, and always washed thoroughly to remove any dirt or residues. Like all fruits, they’re best enjoyed fresh and clean. If you have food allergies or specific health conditions, always discuss your diet with your gynaecologists or nutritionists.
