Can We Eat Eggs During Pregnancy

Pregnant women need a balanced and nutrient-dense diet. They need around 300-450 extra daily calories, especially in their second and third trimesters. Nutrients such as energy, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and most minerals, including calcium, vitamin D, iron, and folate, are essential for the baby's development in the womb and for the mother's well-being. One such superfood suggested by most doctors during pregnancy is eggs. 1 2

As long as eggs are completely cooked or pasteurised, pregnant women can enjoy eggs as a part of a healthy diet that also includes plenty of vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, and a variety of protein-rich foods like lean meat, chicken, legumes, nuts and seeds. 3 4

The Heart Foundation recommends up to 7 eggs per week for an individual. As an easy source of proteins, vitamins and minerals, eggs are a valuable addition to a daily meal plan for both pregnant women and the growing baby in the womb. Consuming eggs as a part of a balanced diet can help support fetal development and meet the nutritional needs of women during pregnancy. But don't forget to ensure that the eggs are properly cooked and consumed in moderation, along with other wholesome foods for complete nourishment. 12
