Yes. Fully ripe papaya, when eaten in moderation, is generally considered safe for most pregnant women. When papaya ripens completely, the papain content drops significantly, making it much gentler on the body.
To be honest, ripe papaya also offers some benefits such as:
- Supports nourishment (contains vitamin C, folate, and fiber)
- Aids digestion and reduces constipation
- Boosts gut health, which often takes a back seat during pregnancy
Often, papaya is considered risky during pregnancy. That’s because papaya latex contains an enzyme called papain. When a papaya is raw or semi-ripe, it contains papain in higher amounts as compared to when it’s ripe.2
Papain can act similarly to prostaglandins, which are known to stimulate uterine contractions. Because of this, raw or unripe papaya has traditionally been linked to a higher risk of miscarriage, especially in early pregnancy.3 4
This is why doctors and nutritionists strongly advise avoiding raw or partially ripe papaya throughout pregnancy.
But you should be extra careful with papaya if you have a history of miscarriage or preterm labor. Or if your doctor has advised dietary restrictions against papaya. In such cases, it’s best to choose safer fruits like apples and bananas.
